the best wanton mee in singapore – ANG MO WANTON MEE
i am seriously taking a huge risk blogging about angmo wanton mee: that more and more people will discover my best-kept foodie secret.
it is the, IMO, world’s best wanton noodles. springy egg noodles, expertly tossed and cooked in boiling yellow beans and anchovies stock, “lao”-ed in ANGMO FAMOUS vinegary chilli, topped with charsiew (rather ordinary) and most important of all, deep fried pork lard (browned and crackled so well that any fat is all gone) and fried shallots! the other make-or-break element of ANG MO WANTON MEE (AMWTM for short) the melt in your mouth, not-to0-big-nor-too-small pork wantons. the wonton skin is silky soft, the pork filling a burst of flavour, and so tender with not too many fatty pieces. dab some AMWTM chilli on top the wanton, pop it whole damn thing in your mouth, and there you have it: recipe of gastronomical orgasm. WHY PAY HUNDREDS for FINE DINING WHEN YOU GET THIS for $3.50 a bowl?
BUT…and yes, like all fucking good food deals, there’s the “BUT”. in our case, the BUT is the WAIT. the wait will kill you. on a weekend, you can turn up at AMWTM at 6 am in the moring (they open at 7) to find already 6 persons in the queue before you. our longest waiting record: 1.5 hrs.
many a great individuals (and families) before us have upped and left in frustration at the wait, without getting their noodles. i am the most impatient person in the world, and yet, i am drawn, again and again, every week, without fail, mind you, to AMWTM for my carbs fix.
i have given up on any semblance of a balanced and healthy diet for this ANG MO wtm. i will always, and forever be true to AMWTM, and hereby profess to the world that i will not eat any other wanton mee, than ANG MO.
a tad dramatic for a bowl of wanton noodles you dont think? hurhur. wait till you’ve tried it. (:
